Getting to Hoover Dam and Tourist Information:
Hoover Dam is only 30 miles South of Las Vegas and Las Vegas Hotels. Hoover Dam is one of mans greatest architectural achievements. Still in operation since the 30's supplying electrical power to Nevada, Arizona and California, it is truly a wonder to see. Visitors can actually go into the depths of the dam and tour the inner workings. Or you can peer over the edge of the nearly 800 foot drop while standing in two time zones at once! A nearby museum shows movies and artifacts involving it's creation. The beautiful new visitors center, at the edge of the dam, opened in September 95 and ironically enough cost much more to build than the dam itself did 60 years ago. Open 9:00am-4:15pm daily. Adm: $5 Adults, $2.50 Seniors & Children 10-16, Children under 10 free; Includes tour of dam and movie.

Hoover Dam Facts:
Stretching across the 1,400 mile course of the Colorado River at the narrows of Black Canyon, Hoover Dam (the highest in the world) is monumental in size. Its dimensions are massively impressive for it is 726 feet high, has a curved crest of 1,244 feet, a top width of 45 feet, and a bottom width of 660 feet. The concrete used in its construction came to a total of 3.25 million cubic yards. Lake Mead, the drowned valley created behind the dam, has a shoreline of 550 miles, a maximum depth of 500 feet, and a surface area of almost 160,000 acres. The Lake is the largest man-made reservoir in the United States and when it became filled for the first time, it was found by careful measurement that the weight of water was so great that it depressed the Earth's crust round about by seven inches.
Construction work began in 1931 and, two years ahead of schedule, on 30 September, 1935 the then American President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, officially dedicated the dam open. Its last, and 17th, generator went into commercial use in 1961. Nowadays, the waters are used to irrigate a million acres of land in the western United States and half-a-million in Mexico. Additionally, they supply the water to 18 million people in homes and businesses in such cities as, Las Vegas and Los Angeles. Finally, the four billion kilowatt hours of hydro-electricity generated each year, is enough to satisfy the needs of 1.3 million people living in Nevada, Arizona, and California.

Directions to Hoover Dam and some of the things you can expect to see there:
Hoover Dam is located 30 miles southeast of Las Vegas on US Highway 93. From Las Vegas go southeast on I-515. I-515 turns into US-93, so just continue on until you reach the dam. A 459 space parking garage is adjacent to the Visitor Center. The parking garage charges a $5.00 fee.

Upon Arrival
Parking and access to the Visitor Center is most convenient from the parking garage on the Nevada side of the dam. Oversized vehicles, such as recreational vehicles, and vehicles with trailers will need to use the parking lots on the Arizona side of the Dam. From the parking garage walk toward the dam. A short distance from the parking garage you will find both an escalator and elevator that will take you down to the Reception Lobby where you can purchase your tickets for a tour.

Moving past the cashiers you will enter the visitor lobby. To the right you will see the Information Desk. There you will be able to get brochures. Straight out from the cashiers is the entrance to the Theater One, where a 15-minute film on the construction of the dam is shown. The story of the Marble, one of the boats used to survey the Colorado River in 1922, is shown on a monitor next to the rest rooms. Rest room facilities are behind the Marble.

Exhibit Gallery
The Exhibit Gallery features interactive multimedia presentations about the construction of the dam and the ecology of the desert southwest. An observation deck is located on the upper floor of this level accessible by stairs and elevator. Concession facilities are located on the bottom level of the parking garage.

Several sculptures, commissioned by the Bureau of Reclamation, can be seen outside on the Nevada side of the dam.
